🍿 A Different World (2026)
Rating: 6/10
I liked pieces of this Hillman more than the whole thing. The new class is watchable. The season never quite gives them the campus.
Maleah Joi Moon keeps Deborah from turning into a mascot, impulsive, a little sheltered, better when the show lets her screw up instead of speechifying. Alijah Kai’s Rashida is the sharpest new presence; the roommate tension actually feels like two people sharing a room, not a pilot setup. Once the camera stays with the freshmen, the single-camera look and Atlanta locations help.
What I couldn’t shake is how long the show spends reopening old lockers. Hardison and Guy are still good, but early episodes belong to the reunion and the marriage subplot, so the kids introduce themselves in someone else’s story. By the time the ensemble clicks, you’re already racing a ten-episode clock.
Strengths:
- Moon plays Deborah like a person, not a legacy assignment.
- Kai gives the roommate scenes some real friction.
- Campus and HBCU detail look observed, not staged.
- Midseason stretch finally mixes jokes, romance, and pressure.
- Returning cast works when they don’t freeze the plot.
Areas for Improvement:
- First stretch is too much alumni catch-up.
- Ten half-hours crush a full school year.
- Several freshmen stay sketches.
- Issue plots land, then get rushed off stage.
- The show finds its own voice late, then ends.
It tries to balance nostalgia with modern anxiety but forgets to actually have fun.
Fine for a weekend binge if you already care about Hillman. Not the one that earns a second pass on its own.
