๐Ÿฟ Revival – Season 1

Rating: 6.5/10 โ€โ™€๏ธ โ„๏ธ

Melanie Scrofano does her best to anchor this snowy supernatural noir. She gives Officer Dana Cypress a gritty, exhausted edge. Unfortunately, her performance fights an uphill battle against a messy script. The directors establish a great small-town claustrophobia. But the pacing completely stumbles early on.

They front-load too much world-building. It suffocates the core murder mystery. The cold cinematography hides some budget constraints well. However, the wider conspiracy plots get convoluted fast. The show bites off way more than it can chew. I wanted more focus on the central family dynamic.

Strengths:

  • Scrofano’s razor-sharp, emotionally bruised lead performance.
  • Gloomy, atmospheric production design maximizes the rural setting.
  • The non-zombie resurrection mythology is a genuinely clever hook.
  • Mystery that sustains curiosity through the finale.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Heavy exposition drags down the entire first half of the season.
  • Government conspiracy subplots feel generic and wildly distracting.
  • The core murder mystery constantly loses momentum to side stories.
  • Serious dramatic beats that land flatter than the wry ones.

A fantastic supernatural premise buried under clumsy execution and pacing issues.
