🍿 East of Eden (2026)
Rating: 7.5/10 ️
The first half completely had me. The second half thins out, but I am still glad I pressed play.
Zoe Kazan takes Steinbeck’s family epic and keeps the dread in the atmosphere. Florence Pugh controls the screen as Cathy Ames. She is calculated, then suddenly plain about what she wants, and that plainness is scarier than any villain trope.
The Salinas Valley looks gorgeous and never lets that dread drop. The middle chapters drag once the story steps away from Cathy. Faist keeps the brother conflict sharp. Abbott stays so mournful that the marriage never feels like an equal fight.
Strengths:
- Pugh’s Cathy is controlled, physical, and mean without turning into a cartoon.
- Hoon Lee gives the show its best quiet scenes and its moral spine.
- Faist and Letts make the Connecticut years feel like a wound that never closes.
- The light, the doorways, and Karpman’s score sell the biblical scale.
- Restoring Lee, and treating Cathy as a will instead of a plot device, is the real upgrade on 1955.
Areas for Improvement:
- Abbott’s Adam is so flat that the marriage never feels like a real contest.
- Cal and Aron arrive too late for their rivalry to hurt the way their father’s does.
- Samuel Hamilton is mostly a visitor. Cutting his family costs the story its other half.
- Cathy’s explained origin and the later aging makeup both sand down the mystery.
- Once the show leaves Cathy, the pace drops and the vistas start doing the work.
Worth the seven hours for Pugh and Lee. Just do not expect the whole book.
