🍿 The Death of Robin Hood (2026)

Rating: 6/10 ⚰️

I wanted a grim, earned end for the legend. Instead I sat through two hours of a man who already hates himself and a movie that mostly agrees with him.

Hugh Jackman commits to the exhaustion. His Robin looks like someone who has spent years burying the people who came for him, and the physical weight of that shows in every shot. Jodie Comer holds the film together as Sister Brigid by simply staying still while everything around her frays.

Sarnoski and Pat Scola shot on 35mm and shift the aspect ratio once Robin reaches the priory, moving from wide myth to closer faces. The early fights stay ugly and unglamorous. Then the movie settles into long rooms and quiet guilt, and the quiet stops feeling intentional.

Strengths:

  • Jackman’s raw, worn-out physical commitment.
  • Comer’s calm refusal to overplay the prioress.
  • 35mm photography that matches the dirt and light.
  • Early violence that refuses to look clean or fun.
  • The aspect-ratio shift as a real storytelling choice.

Areas for Improvement:

  • Second half repeats the same guilt without new pressure.
  • Myth-busting stays surface-level and stated.
  • Almost no humor or breathing room.
  • Supporting characters stay thin and functional.
  • The final choice never feels as heavy as it wants to.

If you like slow, miserable studies of men who want to stop existing, this might work. Otherwise it is easier to leave the legend alone.
