🍿 Why Did I Get Married Again?

Rating: 5.5/10

️

Sixteen years later, Tyler Perry takes the original crew to Lake Como for a destination wedding. The scenery gets a massive upgrade, but the script is stuck in the past. Taraji P. Henson’s arrival injects some genuine, chaotic electricity into the ensemble. When she shares the screen with Tasha Smith, it’s exactly the kind of fireworks I tuned in for.

Unfortunately, the momentum stalls out fast. At 1 hour and 49 minutes, the second act drowns in clunky exposition as characters aggressively summarize a decade and a half of off-screen history. The tonal whiplash between broad slapstick and heavy generational trauma remains as jarring as ever.

Strengths:

  • Original ensemble chemistry when the camera just lets them talk.
  • Lake Como is the franchise’s strongest visual setting.
  • The “kids inherited our mess” theme is the sharpest idea in the series.
  • Tasha Smith and Jill Scott remain the most grounded performances.

Areas for Improvement:

  • The next-gen plot recycles the first film’s infidelity beat almost beat-for-beat.
  • Dialogue still lectures instead of revealing.
  • Several original characters are simply gone.
  • Resolutions arrive because someone delivers the required speech.

Nostalgia brings you to the altar, but the execution makes you question the commitment.

Pretty villa. Familiar sermon. Same question, same answers.
